Battle Royal - Movie Review

Battle royal is an action psychological thriller released in japan in 2000
the plot involves a military operation in which students are gathered to play in a game called Battle Royal
the students must kill off each other in order to survive, the last one living is the winner.

The Hunger Games which recently was released is very similar plot wise but this is NO Hunger Games .
we are talking blood by the buckets, decapitations, knives in heads and suicides.
As the movie starts out it is very claustrophobic creating a sense that is hopeless
but while the body count rises we learn more about these characters as the movie progresses we start to get a feel that there just maybe hope for this group of students.

There are subplots along the movie..we learn of why some students are more violent in there survival tactics than others, stemming from family abuse etc .. it is a wild ride and not for the faint of heart it is easy to see why this movie has been banned in many countries ..but it is not all senseless violence .. it is a clash of the youths generation with the modernized adult .. thoughts on respecting your elders are put in place.

Cinematography

The film is shot on clear vivid digital cameras and some of the landscapes on the island are a sight to behold
with scenes shot at sunset and lush green scenery of the island.

the soundscore works perfect here building tense scenes

Acting is on par from all of the actors and the special effects are gory and good
there is minimal use of CGI blood the effects are mostly old school prop gore.

Conclusion

Battle Royal is a gem of film and now with the release of hunger games is gaining more of a audience.

Good movie but may not be for everyone because of the subject matter and the ruthless approach to it.

if you like foreign movies, action and a crazy twisted plot i recommend Battle Royal.
